There's an independent movie at Sundance this year that looks promising -

American Hardcore. Inspired by Steven Blush's book "American Hardcore: A tribal history" Paul Rachman's feature documentary debut is a chronicle of the underground hardcore punk years from 1979 to 1986.

In other words the only time there was an American punk movement. Anyone who thinks there is a punk scene now wasn't around in those days. Most of what passes as punk these days is just fucking pop music.
