I just saw Napolean Dynamite last week. During the dance scene that song "forever young" was playing in the background and I groaned loudly and remarked, "Euggh, god, this song...horrible freshman year in highschool..." My husband said, "What? I don't think I've ever heard this before."
Was it just me, or did this song get MEGA airplay in SLC? I think KCGL or KRP or KJQ or whatever-the-fuck it became used to overplay a couple of songs that were really pretty obscure to the rest of the world, the other one that comes to mind is "Doot-doot" by Fruer. I've met many non-SL people who claimed to be rabid New Wave fans in the 80's but had never even heard of Fruer. On the flip side, I had never heard "Pass the Duchie" until I was in my 20's, tho my ex-husband (SL native) insists that KCGL *did* play that one.
Well everyone remembers shit differently I guess. And my ex was 7 years older than me...

Re: Napolean Dynamite & KCGL
Wed, March 23, 2005 - 11:08 AMPass the Duchie was played on KCGL (or whatever the heck it was originally called.) The station started playing half hair metal and half new wave, then seemed to go totally new wave. I thank them for knowing songs by Haircut 100, Madness, Kaja GooGoo, and others. There were few alternative (before alternative became equal with mainstream) stations in those days. We were lucky.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Re: Napolean Dynamite & KCGL
Wed, March 23, 2005 - 3:50 PMThose KCGL years..... There's still a ton of songs I solely associate with that radio station... Faith No More's "We Care Alot"... The Stranglers' "All Roads Lead to Rome"... Freur's "Devil and Darkness"... Vicious Pink's "Take Me Now"....
I had a black, blue and pink zebra striped KCGL bumper sticker on my turntable for years that said "I know Paul King" on it.......
I also remember the day they pulled the plug on it after it had been bought out and it was like the new wave nation of SLC was on the verge of committing mass suicide!!!! And they had every reason to be upset... We were all very lucky to have a radio station like that back in the 80's.... I talk to people in L.A. all of the time- total self-proclaimed new wave freaks- and they usually have no idea who or what I'm talking about when I start rambling off band names.... Oh, those were the days.... -

Re: Napolean Dynamite & KCGL
Wed, March 23, 2005 - 4:41 PMDon't forget Sigue Sigue Sputnik. Vicous Pink! I would have forgotten them if you hadn't mentioned it, and I even had the single. Christ, what could have happened to that? Some lucky bastard came across it at the DI where I dumped it, I guess.
Remember the Geek Patrol? My sister, who introduced me to New Wave, has gotten some sort of brain tumor where the mid-80's are concerned. She doesn't remember any of it, even though she hung around at the Maxim, Palladium, Alice's and the rest of it.
She's essentially a soccer mom in Denver now. -

Re: Napolean Dynamite & KCGL
Wed, March 23, 2005 - 4:44 PMOH and I was wondering if anyone else remembers that it used to be called "Rock 107?" I was only about 11 at the time so I think my memory is corrupted. Again, my sister(s) are no help with this. They got into the Grateful Dead in the early 90's and everything that happened to them prior seems to have been erased.
